After the Storm!

Friday, the "red weather alert" was reduced to "orange" at 10 am.  However, the Promenade car lane on the sea side wasn't opened until around 4 pm and the police continued to "dissuade" people from using the wide sidewalk along the seaside.  However, even police tape didn't stop them.  So, for at least 5 hours, motorcycle cops patrolled up and down the sidewalk on the Promenade telling people to move.  As fast as they cleared them, other people replaced them.  While the sea was pretty rough and waves quite high, it didn't look that dangerous to me.  However, I am used to the storms on the west coast which look worse.  There was, however, some damage further inland, including loss of electricity to hundreds of homes and one river spilled over its banks.  Later in the day, the rain stopped and the sun came out a bit and things got back to normal.  Here are some shots of the waves and the sea yesterday.

We stayed inside for a lot of the day except to go out and get "supplies" - aka wine and food.  For those who don't know, there is a chain of stores in France called Picard.  It sells frozen food products of every description from appetizers, vegetables, prepared meals such as pastas and meats, plus seafood, meat, fish, and desserts.  So, Chef M. Picard prepared our dinner last evening.  We have used the meals several times this week with varying degrees of success.  The pasta dishes we bought a few days ago weren't great but the other meals were good.  Last evening, it was a potato galette with duck confit and some salad we'd bought at Carrefour (supermarket) and, for dessert, we had panna cotta with a caramel (also from Picard).  Along with the wine we'd bought at a fraction of the price it would be at home, our meal was less than $20 each - and that was with two bottles of wine!  it was a nice evening to stay in and watch the world go by on the "Prom".

For our last full day here, we woke up to bright sunshine, an almost cloudless sky, and a temperature of 19'.  What more could we ask for!  My friend who lives here booked us a table at the Nice Yacht Club for lunch.  It was lovely sitting on the terrace enjoying the view - and certainly something we would not have expected the previous day!  The waves were crashing onto Coco Beach - an area where mainly locals go.  While we were having lunch, a huge ferry from Corsica arrived.

After that, we headed to Antibes for a return, albeit quick, visit.  It is such a pretty place with its ramparts, main square and little pedestrian streets.

We ended our day with Elaine having cocktails on the terrace of Le Siecle at the Hotel West End.  It was a perfect way to end the afternoon.  Later, Delcie and I shared a pizza and made it an early evening.  Her Uber is arriving at 4:15 am Sunday to take her to the airport.  Yikes!

Morning on the Promenade des Anglais

Sunday was also my last day here in Nice.  It was another lovely day.  I am going to miss this place - watching the sea and all the activity on the Promenade des Anglais each day has been a joy.  I am hoping to return here again next October.  However, Alsace awaits.  The plan today is to spend the afternoon in Villefranche sur Mer with Elaine before I go to the airport for my journey to Strasbourg - 2 one hour flights: from Nice to Lyon then Lyon to Strasbourg.  Once there, I get to spend just over a week in another one of my favourite places with two of my favourite people.  More about today's afternoon in Villefranche sur Mer and Alsace in the next blog.
